Hawaiian Petroglyph Guitar, 1990

Hawaiian Petroglyph Guitar, 1990

Inlay by Larry Robinson; Guitar by Richard Hoover, Santa Cruz Guitar Company

Henry Kaiser, a well-known guitarist of the San Francisco Bay Area, asked Larry Robinson to create an unusual inlay on the fingerboard of this guitar. Inspired by the beautiful koa wood of this instrument, as well as by some southwestern petroglyph inlays Larry had previously done, Henry asked Larry to use a Hawaiian petroglyph motif. The result of this collaboration of musician and artist is quite amazing. The copper inlay gracefully decorates the fingerboard of this slender guitar body and nicely complements its beautiful koa wood. Notice that the inlay not only makes the Hawaiian theme prominent in the visual appearance of this guitar, but also highlights the style in which this guitar can be played. Henry Kaiser uses this guitar to play Hawaiian “slack key” style.

I decided to try to use shells as a way to represent the beaches and general feel of the Hawaiian landscape.

The first one integrates Polynesian-style decoration with a top-down view of a cone shell. I decided to try only decorating the bowl of one of the a's to see if it would look out of balance. It does.

The middle and bottom are a modified Futuris with the profile of a cone shell native to Hawaii substituting the A's. I like the simplicity of it and how the letters are tracked out but I'm worried that it might not be immediately apparent what those forms are. I'm hoping to convey an open or breezy feel with these ones while simultaneously incorporating the natural ornamentation of the landscape.
